Some of you might remember my post with the classic Bouyiourdi with tomatoes, peppers and cheese – baked until everything melds together and awaits your anxious dipping of thy crusty bread. This spin on Bouyiourdi will also satisfy those who love the act of dunking bread into food. Those of you who like the whole [...]

Today, I wish to share a dish that uses an ingredient that’s been harvested, salt-cured and enjoyed since Byzantine times. I find it amusing when some people try to predict food trends and declare a certain ingredient as “passe” when the cuisine and ingredient itself have survived the ages. Today I would like to continue sharing with you my visit to the area in Greece known as Leonidio (Arcadia). I stayed for three days in this area that awes you with both mountain and sea. I was a guest of Elena and her family and the memories are still very fresh. Each day, we [...]

One of the most well-known foods in Greek cuisine is pita bread. It’s used to scoop-up dips that are usually included in the mix of mezedes (Greek appetizers). We wrap souvlaki in them, we wrap gyro in them, we use pita bread to scoop Taramosalata, Melitzanosalata, Tzatziko, Red Pepper Dip, Parsley Salad, Htipiti, Fava, Hummus. [...]

Poutinga is the Greek answer to bread pudding. My take on Poutinga inspired by the Corfu (most common) version. Other versions can be found from Santorini. It used to be that regional dishes of Greece were only to be found in it’s area of origin but in this day & age, word travels fast, distances [...]

I gave you a tour of the Kapani Market of Thessaloniki (a few days ago) and I mentioned that the Modiano Agora (market) was also nearby. The two markets really operate in tandem, separated merely by concrete, Ermou Street. The Modiano Market got it’s name from Ely Modiano, the architect who designed this arcade that [...]

In Greek cuisine, dips are often referred to as a salad. This salad contains a most unusual main ingredient, one that is abundant, isn’t expensive, available everywhere and it’s a surprising taste sensation. Want to surprise guests at your next dinner? Serve them some Parsley salad and see if they can guess what it’s made [...]

Last year I finally splurged and bought myself a pasta maker and although I do still use dried (store bought) pasta, nothing can compare to the ritual and rewarding meal one has with making and eating pasta. Another food journey has taken me to making my own bread. I’ve become kind of a bread snob, [...]

I’m often asked why us Greeks celebrate Easter on a different day than everyone else. This question is only partly true as I can recall when our Easter fell on the same day as the Catholic Easter. A calculation is made and there are three main factors that affect the date: It is based on [...]

When I was younger, I would go to islands that were certain to have a good nightlife. A good nightlife is lots of bars and nightclubs, a nice array of women (from all around the world), interesting and friendly people from all around the world, decent food scene with sit-down and take-out available. Another “must [...]
